JAN SLUYTERS
Jan
Sluyters poster for a dance is one of the most unusual and special of Dutch
posters. Its vibrant Fauve-inspired palette immediately sets it apart from other
Dutch posters, and its spontaneity is equally alien.
Sluyters
studied in Amsterdam and was clearly inspired by French art. In 1909 he formed a
progressive group called "The Modern Art Ring" which included Toorop
and Mondrian. The group was consumed with the new movement of Picasso and Braque
called Cubism. Sluyters made only a few posters, all between the years 1913 and
1924.
